Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
